Why Proficiency Builders?

Students who are truly proficient in core academic subjects upon high school graduation have options: ample opportunities in the areas of higher education – university, college, or vocational – that lead to rewarding and fulfilling careers.  Students with proficiency gaps don’t have the same options, and what options they do have are very limited.

Our purpose at Proficiency Builders is to help students gain true academic proficiency, which leads to confident and skilled students who are fully prepared for success post high school. 

Nine years of tutoring has solidified our belief that all students are capable of proficiency.  Reasons for proficiency gaps vary, but generally involve a misunderstanding of a basic, but foundational concept, a lack of self-confidence, and poor organizational/study preparation skills.  Proficiency gaps are common for many students in the United States and these gaps are widening, especially as compared to proficiency levels in other countries.  This is significant as proficiency gaps means skill gaps – skills that are essential for progressing academically or in a trade.  Especially troubling is the fact that most of these students are capable of proficiency, which is an opportunity lost, resulting in significant challenges for these young men and women in the future.
