Speaking and Listening
Often overlooked in traditional language arts assessments, speaking and listening are critical components of communication.  The assessment might investigate the ability to follow and interpret oral instructions or discussions, the ability to articulate ideas clearly, and the ability to analyze spoken information.

Critical Thinking and Analysis
Critical thinking is a cornerstone of middle school language arts, as students are expected to engage more deeply with texts.
